Ministers approve renewable energy quota shifts to photovoltaic sector

Co-Founder of Arava Power Company Yosef Abramowitz celebrates the Israli Government's decision to increase the percentage of solar energy projects that will be allowed in a number of regions throughout the country. The Jerusalem Post announced this important decision today:

"The Ministerial Committee for Renewable Energy approved on Monday the transfer of a sizable chunk of renewable energy quotas to the photovoltaic industry, as well as provisions for the state to underwrite solar facilities in the West Bank.

The committee’s resolutions allow for the repositioning of 180 megawatts originally allocated for two solar-thermal plants for photovoltaic use – a decision to be finalized within 90 days. In addition to enabling the shift of these 180 megawatts, the committee also approved the diversion of 70 megawatts from large wind farms, 20 megawatts from small wind facilities, and an additional 20 megawatts from overall solar-thermal quotas to the photovoltaic sector. These new plans, according to the Energy, Water, and National Infrastructure Ministry, will lead to a savings of over NIS 2 billion for the Israeli economy over the next 20 years.

Not only did the ministerial committee approve these quota shifts, but they also authorized a measure that would allow the government to underwrite the financial debt for photovoltaic projects in the Judea and Samaria."

What Makes Anglo Olim Exceptional?

This week Nefesh B'Nefesh recognized Energiya's founder Yosef Abramowitz with the Bonei Zion Award, an honor bestowed upon Anglo Olim who excel in their contribution to Israeli society in a number of areas. The list of this year's award recipients is truly staggering, and includes the founders of a food bank, a cutting-edge women's center for religious studies, a medical school and a political comic strip. While the percentage of immigrants from North America, the UK and other English-speaking countries remains relatively low, the impact is decidedly not. Those who have chosen to leave a fairly comfortable lifestyle and familial support network behind and begin life anew, often facing a life-long struggle to learn the language and cultural nuances of Israeli life do so out of commitment to strengthen Israel. Are Anglo Olim over educated, spoiled and overly idealistic? Probably. And Israel benefits greatly from their efforts.

Israeli Green Energy Guru Goes to London

By Nathan Jeffay,The Jewish Chronicle
Israel’s foremost green energy pioneer is visiting London next week, where he will propose, among other innovations, a “renewable energy” solution to the Iranian crisis.
“Nuclear power is the power of war and solar power is the power of peace,” said Yosef Abramowitz, who has set up massive solar fields in Israel’s Negev desert.
“If the Iranian government says it is concerned about having electricity for its people, no one so far has either called its bluff or helped it towards cheap energy that is greener.”
Mr Abramowitz will argue at a meeting in Parliament that the West should try to end the nuclear crisis with Iran by offering to help it develop large-scale green energy capabilities.
He acknowledged that his idea is unorthodox, but said he thinks there is a “diplomatic opening” for it.
Mr Abramowitz was invited to the UK by Israel’s London ambassador Daniel Taub, and will meet David King, Foreign Secretary William Hague’s new special representative on climate change. He will also address a round-table breakfast organised by the Anglo-Israel Association.
Mr Abramowitz considers London the “epicentre” for green innovation, and wants to propose a “strategic alliance” between the UK and Israel to take sustainable energy infrastructure to poor countries, simultaneously boosting economies and helping the environment.
In this plan, British and Israeli companies would co-operate on green energy projects, with state support.
American-born Mr Abramowitz set up the first large-scale solar field in Israel in 2010.
Since 2010, he has taken his business global. His company, Energiya Global Capital, is developing solar projects in countries including South Africa, Romania, Cyprus and the Galapagos Islands.
When it becomes active this summer, his company operation in Rwanda will provide seven per cent of the country’s power.
He said that, when he addresses the UK Jewish community, he will propose a change in investment patterns. “I want to challenge the community to start thinking about ‘impact investment’ in the state of Israel,” he explained, adding that he is not talking about “something speculative or risky” but rather about projects that will make money while doing good in social and/or environmental spheres.
He will suggest that ideal investments should, like his power projects in poor African countries, have a “triple bottom line” — they should make money as businesses, have a positive impact and create goodwill towards Israel.

the Twilight of the Oil Giants is Upon Us

With the growing knowledge that our over-reliance on fossil fuels is at best misplaced, at worst tragic, we view every irresponsible act by the oil giants as proof that their heyday is nearly over. At least we hope it's over. In the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico we attempt to absorb the enormous loss of wildlife, of livelihood and of physical and mental health in the region as a senseless act of greed, not unlike being shot on the last day of a war.

As the clean up and cover up both continue long into the third year after the spill, Gulf residents are still getting sick. Researchers implicate the solvent Corexit, the cocktail that was sprayed onto the crude in an effort to dissolve the spill as having a detrimental effect on, among other things, reproductive health. Area residents have reported a high rate of miscarriage, birth defects and respiratory illness in infants born since the spill. Health care workers are still waiting to see what cancers will emerge in the surviving population.

This should be more than enough evidence that we need to make some global changes. The earth and its residents can only tolerate so much abuse, and the continued endangerment by drilling, fracking, transporting and burning fossil fuels must end. There are numerous companies developing alternative energy sources, including solar, wind and hemp poised at the ready and waiting to provide fuel for the planet that is not expensive, not toxic, not dangerous and not the cause of senseless illness, bloodshed or irreparable damage to the environment.

Be part of the solution! Invest in green energy projects around the world. Opportunities abound to help companies put the oil giants out of business.

Gigawatt Global Signs Energy Deal in Rwanda

Gigawatt Global, Energiya Global Capital's Dutch partner company has signed a Power Purchase Agreement that will soon lead to construction of an 8.5 megawatt, grid-connected solar field.

The agreement was signed yesterday by the Minister of State in Charge of Energy and Water, Eng. Emma Francoise Isumbingabo, and Chaim Motzen, the Vice President, GigaWatt Global, and witnessed by Tony Nsanganira, the Acting Chief Operating Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

GigaWatt Global is a multi-national renewable energy company focused on development and management of utility-scale solar fields in renewable energy in emerging markets.

“So far this is the biggest solar energy project we are going to implement in Rwanda. Previously we have seen mini-solar power plants being developed in several areas of the country,” said Eng. Isumbigabo shortly after penning the agreement in Kigali.

She stated that, the project is timely and very important as the government focuses on generating affordable, reliable and accessible energy for the betterment of the citizens.

“The efficiency of solar energy in Rwanda is more than 50 per cent and with operational of 8.5MW by next year, the government will have taken great steps in bridging the current energy gap,” she said.

The minister hailed GigaWatt Global for honouring their investment plan and pledged support towards ensuring that the project becomes a reality.

According to Motzen, construction works will start soon.

“We are going to fully finance the project through equity finances and acquire debts from financial institutions,” he added.

With over 2,800MW of solar projects under development worldwide, the Dutch firm brings to Rwanda an extensive experience in renewable energy project finance and development.

Two weeks ago, Rwanda signed a Rwf241 billion energy agreement with an Indian company, Punj Lloyd to generate 100 MW of peat energy in North Akanyaru, Bugesera District, Eastern Province.

The government unveiled Rwf3 trillion ($4.7bn)-road map for energy production and accessibility over the next five years.

The target is to gradually tap 215MW from peat, 310MW from geothermal, 320MW from hydro power, and 300MW from methane gas, among others.

At the moment the country produces 110.8MW equivalent to 16 per cent in terms of domestic accessibility. With 1, 000MW, accessibility could reach 70 per cent.

The Solar Energy Scale

I recently acquired a new toy; it's a tiny box with a loop and chain that hooks on to a key ring. The box has a little solar panel on it. If I place it in direct sunlight for a few hours it will charge my cell phone. This neat gadget cost $20. With this device I gained new perspective on Energiya Global's mission.

Here is how it works: I spent $20 on a solar powered cell phone charger, reducing my use of other energy sources by an infinitesimal amount. But it doesn't have to stop there. I personally know around 100 people who might be willing to use a solar powered phone charger. With the convenience and wide reach of social media platforms I could probably stretch that number to several hundred, and it could grow exponentially from there. And soon, not only would many, many cell phone users worldwide be charging with solar-generated electricity, but manufacturers of solar-powered chargers would be springing up daily, improving the technology and driving the price down to keep up with demand.

The small shift in behavior would lead to other changes. If I can use the sun to charge my phone, what else can I power with the sun? If consumers demanded grid-connected solar power for their other electric devices we wouldn't be able to build commercial solar fields fast enough.

The solar power revolution would grow through a global awakening in clean, renewable energy consciousness.

Pretty soon, we've saved the planet. And all for $20.

The Real Change

The setting: Nestled in the picturesque Pioneer Valley in the quiet, academic wellspring that is New England lies an idyllic town. The town is known for its quality of life and history of political correctness. In the town there is a cooperative market that stocks locally-grown organic produce and every natural, clean planet-supporting product one can imagine.

The problem: In the parking lot of the market there are two Toyota hybrids and fifty gigantic, gas guzzling SUVs. Where have we gone wrong?

It is no secret that fossil fuel emissions are problematic. It is not possible that the residents of the most aware town on earth did not get this memo. The problem, simply stated is that comfort, convenience and fashion dominate purchasing trends, even in the most unlikely of markets.

The solution: If the concept of clean living is going to penetrate the pocketbook, the visibility of low-impact products must increase. Children have to see ads for hybrid and electric cars on TV, billboards and in magazines. It has to be cool to save the planet. This message cannot come from quirky individuals or fear-mongering politicians. The cool factor only really thrives in the form of a trend. Money follows trend, trend follows money.

The strategy: We can change the face of the parking lot by investing in socially-responsible, environmentally supportive technologies. Solar energy providers and electric car companies are poised at the ready. All we need is you to believe enough in the possibility of change to join the wave.
